Witness the Future of Dairy Farming at the 4-H Dairy Calf Show!

Get ready to be charmed by the youngest members of our farming community and their adorable calves at the Uxbridge Fair 4-H Dairy Calf Show! This heartwarming event showcases our local youth’s dedication, hard work, and passion as they present their carefully raised dairy calves.

Junior Show: Nurturing Young Talent

Our Junior Show is specially designed to encourage the next generation of dairy farmers:

  • Open to rural youth in Durham West under 10 years as of January 1, 2024, residing in Uxbridge and Scugog Townships.
  • Featuring calves born after March 1, 2024, ensuring a showcase of the youngest and cutest dairy cattle.

Conformation Classes: Learning the Art of Cattle Judging

The Junior Show focuses on conformation classes, where young exhibitors present their calves for evaluation based on breed standards. This process teaches valuable lessons:

  • Understanding Breed Characteristics: Participants learn what makes an ideal dairy calf for their specific breed.
  • Presentation Skills: Young exhibitors practice how to show their calves to their best advantage.
  • Animal Handling: Children develop confidence in working with large animals from an early age.

More Than Just a Competition

The 4-H Dairy Calf Show is about much more than winning ribbons:

  • Educational Opportunity: Young participants learn about animal care, nutrition, and the dairy industry.
  • Character Building: The program instills values of responsibility, dedication, and good sportsmanship.
  • Community Connection: It’s a chance for urban and rural residents to connect over a shared appreciation for agriculture.
  • Family Tradition: Often, you’ll see multiple generations of farming families supporting their youngest members.

A Glimpse into Dairy Farming’s Future

For spectators, the show offers a unique perspective:

  • See the Bond between young handlers and their calves, often due to months of daily care.
  • Learn About Dairy Breeds: Discover the differences between Holstein, Jersey, Ayrshire, and other dairy cattle breeds.
  • Appreciate the Skill: Watch children as young as 5 or 6 confidently lead and present calves many times their size.

Important Note for Exhibitors

Exhibitors must be members in good standing of the 4-H Club in order to have insurance coverage, which the Uxbridge Fair requires.

This requirement ensures the safety of all participants and upholds the standards of the 4-H program.
